SESSOR, Ill. (September 19, 2022) – Canoeist Garrett McDowell from Windsor, Illinoiscaught eight bass weighing 19 pounds and 14 ounces, to win the two-day prize MLF Phoenix Bass Fishing League Presented by TH Marine on Rend Lake in Sessor, Illinois. The tournament was the fifth and final regular season event for the Bass Fishing League Illini division. McDowell earned $5,426 for her win.
McDowell said he started his riprap fishing derby at the north end of Rend, where the wind was widespread and blowing baitfish onto the rock. McDowell said he caught six guards on Saturday morning on a Z-Man Jack Hammer Evergreen ChatterBait , then moved towards fish standing in less than a foot of water. The wind was coming from a different direction on Sunday and the bass wasn’t holding the riprap, so McDowell said he was fishing shallow, but cloud cover hampered quality production.
“With about an hour in, the clouds cleared and I was able to get my last two bites knocking over cypress trees,” McDowell said.
McDowell said he found success using a Omega Revelation Swim Jig for its bite of chypre.
“It feels good,” McDowell said. “My first BFL win was at a Super Tournament in Shelbyville in 2018. It’s just kind of my time of year – when it comes to the fall bite. It’s the kind of moment I shine.
