Phoenix Bass Fishing Regional, other great fishing events coming to Lake Murray

Bass catchers and fans of the sport have apparently developed a strong affinity for Lake Murray.

The waters of Dreher Island State Park in Prosperity are teeming with popular species and have made them attractive to anglers around the world. With over 650 miles of shoreline and over 12 species of fish, including largemouth bass and striper, Lake Murray attracts many visitors for recreation and tourism along its shores.

“We are known for our excellent bass fishing and the wonderful facilities we have at Dreher Island State Park,” said Miriam Atria, President and CEO of Capital City Lake Murray Country.

The Phoenix Bass Fishing Regional Championship, presented by TH Marine, scheduled for October 6-8, is one of three events scheduled over the next seven months. Sponsored by the Capital City Lake Murray Country Regional Tourism Board, the three-day regional championship will feature more than 45 boaters and co-anglers along with tournament winners in four divisions competing for $60,000 and a Phoenix 819 Pro boat. The highest ranked boater in each division will also receive a bonus of $1,000 and the highest ranked co-angler in each division will receive a bonus of $500. Winners will be determined by heaviest three-day catch.

Mabel expects the event to draw between 1,800 and 2,500 spectators. She also wanted to clarify that any bass fish caught during the tournament are not weighed unless they are alive and safety is returned to the waters using special oxygen tanks.

Following the Phoenix event, the United States Angling Confederation and Capital City Lake Murray Country will host the 16th annual World Black Bass Championship in 2022. The week-long event beginning Oct. 16 will feature anglers from over 25 countries and the first day of the event, Youth Angling Day, is free for children of all ages accompanied by an adult.

In addition to the contest, fans will be able to hear the music of an up-and-coming country artist from South Carolina. On October 21, Ridge Spring native Cody Webb will perform at the weigh-in at Dreher Island State Park.
