Local pro and fishing guide, Jimmy Washam from Stantonville, Tennesseesaid it saw the late summer lull and plenty of fish in “no man’s land”, but expects to see cooler temperatures create change by mid-October.
“As the temperature starts to drop, we should see a push into shallow waters,” Washam said. “The fish will really orient themselves on the bait and start chasing gizzard shad in the grass. Any shallow water stuff that has a shad population around should have bass nearby.
“The surface bite will start to heat up and we usually see a small mouth pushing towards the escape channels as well. The Wilson Lake escape race will likely play into this event, for guys who like to target the little mouth in the current.
Washam said he expects to see lots of shad-like lures and surface baits, including walking baits, River2Sea Whopper Ploppers and popbaits, as well as lipless spinnerbaits and crankbaits. . Smallmouth finesse tactics should also play a big role, such as head shaking, Ned rig, and other finesse jigs.
“The Azuma Z Dog Topwater Walker is a walking bait from Profound Outdoors that I’ve caught a lot of fish on recently so I think it will be a big part of the event, as well as the Azuma Shaker Z Lipless Crankbait . I think both are going to weigh a lot of fish right now,” Washam continued. “There’s usually a lingering deep bite around this time of year and chances are someone can take it. have for himself if he finds quality fish that is still offshore.
“That would be the ‘sleeper pattern’ that I think we’re likely to see someone be successful with, using traditional offshore baits like a soccer jig, swimbait and crankbait.”
Washam said he predicted it would take 18 pounds a day to put anglers in contention to win the event.
Anglers will depart daily at 7:00 a.m. CT from Pickwick Landing State Park in Counce. Weigh-ins will also take place at the park and begin at 3 p.m. Fans are invited to attend the event or follow the action online via the “MLF Live” weigh-in broadcasts on MajorLeagueFishing.com.
